Ingredients
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
- 8 ounces egg noodles
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 cups frozen peas and carrots mix
- 1 (6.4-ounce) envelope water-packed tuna
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
- 10 butter crackers, crushed
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Step 2 -In a large pot of boiling water, add 1 teaspoon of the salt and the noodles and cook to al dente, according to the package directions. Drain the water.
Step 3 -In a large, oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter.
Step 4 -Add the flour to the melted butter and cook until it smells toasted, about 2 minutes.
Step 5 -Whisk the chicken broth and the milk into the butter-flour mixture.
Step 6 -Add the onion powder, the garlic powder, and the remaining salt to the sauce mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened, about 5 minutes.
Step 7 -Transfer the skillet from the heat.
Step 8 -Fold the cooked noodles, the peas and carrots, and the tuna into the sauce.
Step 9 -Sprinkle the tuna casserole with the cheese, followed by the crushed crackers.
Step 10 -Bake the tuna casserole until it is bubbly, the cheese has melted, and the cracker topping is golden-brown, about 15-18 minutes.
Step 11 -Let the tuna casserole cool for 5 minutes.
Step 12 -Serve.
